Myths about violence against women
Myths are ideas and beliefs that are not true and can be misleading.
Some of the most common myths about violence against women include:
1) Myth: Forcing your wife or girlfriend
to have sex isn’t rape
Facts: Using force to have sex with your wife, girlfriend or any
other woman is rape. Being married does not give a man the right to rape or
beat his wife. It is illegal in many countries in the Pacific and around the
world.
2) Myth: He doesn’t hit her, so it isn’t
really domestic violence.
Facts: Violence against women is not only physical.
Sexual and emotional violence are also very common and can cause great
harm and lead to death.
3) Myth: Did you see what she was
wearing? She was asking for it!
Facts: Violence against women is never provoked, invited or
deserved by a woman. Everyone has the right to live safe and free from
violence, regardless of who they are, what they say, what they do or what they
wear.
4) Myth: It can’t be that bad if she
hasn’t left.
Facts: There are many reasons why women find it difficult to leave
violent relationships. They may fear for their life, have nowhere else to go or
be financially or physically dependent on the person abusing them.
5) Myth: Violence is caused by drugs and
alcohol.
Fact: While it is true that the risk of violence increases with
drug and alcohol use, this is not the cause of violence. The root cause of
violence against women is gender inequality.
6) Myth: Men are just naturally violent.
Fact: Perpetrators of violence against women are mostly men, but
there is no evidence that men are born violent.
7) Myth: Violence against women is
normal in some cultures and religions.
Fact: Culture and religion are often used as an excuse for violence
against women, but the fact is all women have the right to live free from
violence and abuse, regardless of their culture or religion.
8) Myth: We shouldn’t interfere with
what happens in the home. It is a private matter
Fact: Everyone needs to take action in ending violence against
women and girls regardless of whether it happens in the home, the street, the
workplace or anywhere else.
9) Myth: Violence only happens to poor
and uneducated women.
Fact: Violence against women can affect anyone. It doesn’t matter
if you are rich, poor, educated or uneducated.
10) Myth: Women are also violent towards
men!
Fact: Research has shown that most violence against women is
committed by men.
Violence committed against men by women is not very common and the consequences not often very severe.
